Its name literally translates to 'what a rich man's son eats' — a boastful title for a dish actually sold cheap, by weight, straight out of one giant pot in Chawk Bazar.
Rice, lentils, chickpeas, and chunks of beef or mutton are cooked together with a stated dozen spices into one rich, fragrant mix, then ladled into bags or bowls straight from massive pots. It's a signature of Chawk Bazar's Ramadan iftar market, sold only in the weeks around Ramadan.
Why it's made this way: Tradition credits the recipe to workers at Old Dhaka's centuries-old Boro Bari Mosque, and the dish has stayed a once-a-year Chawk Bazar fixture ever since, drawing crowds who queue specifically for it each Ramadan.
