Truckloads of these small, sweet oranges leave eastern Bhutan bound for India every winter — citrus grown in the Himalayas becoming one of the region's biggest cash crops.
Grown on hillside orchards around Mongar and Trashigang, the oranges ripen through the cool season and show up piled high at roadside stalls and local markets, peeled and eaten on the spot or packed by the sackful for the journey south.
Why it's made this way: Eastern Bhutan's lower elevation and milder climate suit citrus in a way the high western valleys can't, turning orange orchards into one of the region's defining seasonal industries and a fixture of its markets.
