The first Japadog cart opened in 2005 at the corner of Burrard and Smithe, run by Japanese newcomers Noriki and Misa Tamura, and grew into several carts plus a sit-down shop on Robson Street.
A grilled or deep-fried hot dog is topped with distinctly Japanese garnishes like grated daikon, nori, teriyaki sauce, or Japanese mayo instead of ketchup and mustard. Downtown Vancouver street carts sell them to lunchtime crowds.
Why it's made this way: The dish was invented at a downtown Vancouver street cart, blending the North American hot-dog cart with Japanese flavors, and the city remains its home base.
