The order is so universal that 'double-double' functions as its own noun in Canadian English — say the phrase alone at the counter and you'll walk away with exactly that coffee.
A double-double is coffee with two creams and two sugars, ordered by name at Tim Hortons, the coffee-and-donut chain that started in Hamilton, Ontario in 1964 and now anchors small-town main streets and highway stops across the country. It's poured fast into a paper cup with the brown-and-red logo, often paired with a donut or breakfast sandwich.
Why it's made this way: Tim Hortons became so embedded in daily Canadian life that the double-double is regularly cited in national surveys as one of the country's defining cultural habits.
