When Coca-Cola bought out its factory in the 1990s, the drink vanished for over a decade before Beijingers' nostalgia forced it back onto shelves.
Beibingyang, literally 'Arctic Ocean,' is Beijing's beloved orange soda, sold ice-cold from glass bottles at hutong corner shops and street coolers all over the capital. Its bright polar-bear logo and citrusy fizz have marked Beijing summers since 1936.
Why it's made this way: It's one of the few pre-reform Chinese soda brands to survive foreign buyouts and market flooding by global cola giants, making it a symbol of local pride.
