It was founded by German colonists in 1903 — over a century later, Qingdao still throws one of Asia's biggest beer festivals in its honor.
Tsingtao is a crisp, light lager brewed in Qingdao using a recipe rooted in the city's German colonial history, sold everywhere from seafood barbecue stalls to plastic-bag street pours. Locals often buy it fresh and unpasteurized straight from the brewery tap, carried home in thin plastic bags.
Why it's made this way: Qingdao's brief stint as a German concession left it with a brewing tradition unmatched anywhere else in China.
