A single oblea can carry five or six toppings at once — vendors treat it more like a build-your-own sundae than a simple wafer.

Obleas are two paper-thin, disc-shaped wafers pressed together around a thick layer of arequipe (Colombian milk caramel), then customized on the spot with toppings like crushed cookies, shredded cheese, condensed milk, or fruit jam. Street carts stack the wafers fresh and hand them over still dripping with caramel.

Why it's made this way: The plain wafer is a distant cousin of the Communion host, but Colombian vendors turned it into a full dessert canvas, piling on so many toppings that the wafer itself barely peeks through.
