Buna Qalaa

Despite coffee being Ethiopia's most famous export, buna qalaa is one of the few traditional ways coffee is eaten whole rather than brewed.

Buna qalaa, literally 'slaughtered coffee,' is made by roasting whole coffee beans in dhadhaa (spiced butter) until glossy and fragrant, then eating them straight as an energizing snack rather than brewing them into a drink.

Why it's made this way: This Oromo tradition treats coffee as food as much as drink, reflecting the deep-rooted coffee culture of Oromia, the region most credited as coffee's original home.
