Haiti was once the world's largest coffee exporter in the 18th century, and the mountains above Jacmel were part of that original colonial coffee belt, still farmed by smallholders today.
Coffee grown in the hills above Jacmel is roasted dark, ground fine, and brewed through a cloth-sock filter, then served scalding hot and heavily sugared from thermoses at street corners before dawn.
Why it's made this way: Sud-Est's steep coffee-growing hills around Jacmel and Marigot connect the city's street coffee directly to Haiti's colonial-era coffee boom, a heritage locals still take pride in.
