It's just bread, lard, raw onion, and paprika — and somehow that bare-bones combination has become one of the most popular late-night bar snacks around the lake.
A thick slice of crusty bread spread generously with rendered pork lard, topped with sliced raw onion, a dusting of paprika, and sometimes pickles, sold at beach bars and market stands around Lake Balaton, especially late at night.
Why it's made this way: It's peasant food at its most basic — bread and rendered fat were cheap staples for generations of lakeside farmers and fishermen — and it's stuck around as the beloved, unpretentious snack that soaks up a night of drinking by the lake.
