The dessert's name means 'rainbow shawl,' inspired by the way its red, white, and green jelly layers are said to resemble a scarf draped over the shoulder — some Betawi tellings even tie the name to a figure from local folklore named Mayangsari.
Chewy rice-flour-and-sago jelly cake in red, white, and green layers is cut into cubes and served over shaved ice, doused in coconut milk and dark palm sugar syrup. Betawi street vendors, once common in Jakarta's old quarters, sell it especially as an iftar treat during Ramadan.
