'Selendang' means shawl and mayang is the blossom of the areca palm; the name is usually explained by the colourful layers resembling a draped shawl.

Chewy rice-flour-and-sago jelly cake in red, white, and green layers is cut into cubes and served over shaved ice, doused in coconut milk and dark palm sugar syrup. Betawi street vendors, once common in Jakarta's old quarters, sell it especially as an iftar treat during Ramadan.

Why it's made this way: Es selendang mayang is a traditional Betawi street dessert that now survives mainly around traditional markets and Ramadan food bazaars, a rarer sight than it once was on Jakarta's streets.
