The family behind it has been distilling poitín in Connemara for over 170 years across six generations, traditionally flavoring it with a wild local herb called bogbean.
Poitín is Ireland's original clear spirit, distilled from grain or potatoes, historically made in secret in rural stills long before whiskey became dominant. Micil's version is smooth and slightly spicy, sipped neat or used in place of vodka in cocktails.
Why it's made this way: Connemara in County Galway is the traditional heartland of poitín-making, and Micil Distillery — named for the family's original 1848 distiller — is the first legal distillery to open in Galway in over a century.
