Cork has run its own stout rivalry independent of Dublin for over two centuries — Beamish and its cross-town rival Murphy's have battled for the city's pint glasses since the 1850s.
Beamish is a dry stout brewed in Cork since 1792, known for a maltier, more chocolate-forward flavor than its Dublin counterpart. Ordering 'a pint' in a Cork pub doesn't automatically mean Guinness the way it might elsewhere in Ireland.
Why it's made this way: Cork's brewing rivalry between Beamish and Murphy's shaped a distinct local stout culture, giving the city a strong sense of independence from Dublin's Guinness dominance.
