Primitivo is genetically the same grape as California's Zinfandel and Croatia's Crljenak Kaštelanski — DNA testing in the 1990s proved all three were the same vine, though Puglia's version had been growing around Manduria for far longer than either.
Primitivo di Manduria is a bold, deep-purple red wine from the sun-baked vineyards of the Salento peninsula, known for jammy dark fruit, high alcohol, and a soft, warming finish. It's typically drunk with grilled meats, aged pecorino, or on its own as an evening sipper.
Why it's made this way: The grape ripens uniquely early on Puglia's hot, dry, low-lying vineyards around Manduria, giving the wine its name — 'primitivo' means 'early' — and its unmistakable link to the region's Mediterranean climate.
