The traditional way to drink it isn't just a glass of iced coffee — it comes with a small chaser glass of green tea on the side, meant to be sipped between mouthfuls of the sweet, condensed-milk-laden coffee.
Strong, dark-roast coffee is brewed and poured over a pool of sweetened condensed milk at the bottom of a glass, stirred, and served over ice. Cafes and street vendors around Vientiane serve it with a small glass of green tea as standard practice, not an optional extra.
Why it's made this way: French colonial coffee planting combined with a distinctly Lao serving custom — the condensed milk and tea-chaser pairing sets Vientiane's version apart from similar iced coffees elsewhere in Indochina.
