While lowland Laos ferments rice into lao-lao whisky, the cooler slopes around Xieng Khouang favor a different base entirely — fermented corn, a crop far better suited to the plateau's climate than paddy rice.

Corn is fermented and distilled by highland Hmong households into a smooth, sweet, high-proof spirit, traditionally poured into small shot glasses and shared at gatherings and festivals in Xieng Khouang's highland villages.

Why it's made this way: It reflects the Hmong highland farming economy, where maize suits the plateau's cooler climate better than rice, giving the region's home-distilled liquor its own distinct base ingredient compared to lowland Lao-Lao.
