Grape varieties as specific as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc are grown commercially here, on African vineyards planted over a thousand meters above sea level.
Vineyards planted across the hills west of Fianarantsoa, especially the Isandra valley, produce Madagascar's homegrown wine, with the Lazan'i Betsileo cooperative alone farming around 40% of the country's vine acreage.
Why it's made this way: Founded in 1971 with Swiss development support, the Lazan'i Betsileo cooperative turned the cool Betsileo highlands into one of only a handful of wine-producing regions anywhere in tropical Africa.
