Sahambavy, a short drive from Fianarantsoa, is Madagascar's only commercial tea estate — every cup of Malagasy-grown tea traces back to this one plantation.
Tea bushes brought from Kenya in 1970 now cover hundreds of hectares of hillside outside Fianarantsoa, hand-picked and processed into both black and green tea at the estate's own factory.
Why it's made this way: Madagascar isn't a tea-drinking nation by habit, and most of Sahambavy's harvest is exported, but the estate has made the cool, misty Betsileo highlands the country's one home-grown source of tea.
