Its name literally means 'trader's rice' — a nod to the coastal merchants it was originally cooked to feed.
Rice is steamed with coconut milk and fenugreek seeds until fragrant, then served with a tuna or mackerel curry, fried coconut shavings, hard-boiled egg, and pickled vegetables. It's sold every morning from market stalls across Terengganu and Kelantan as the region's default breakfast.
Why it's made this way: It originated among the Terengganu Malay community on Peninsular Malaysia's east coast, feeding traders who worked the ports along this stretch of the South China Sea, and its coconut-fenugreek rice remains unique to the east coast states.
