It's sold after dark from Gaadiya — small mobile food carts parked along Addu's roads — rather than from the daytime tea shops that dominate short-eat culture in Malé and elsewhere.
Grated young coconut flesh is cooked down with dhiyaa hakuru (coconut syrup) until it binds into a soft, chewy candy, traditionally wrapped in dried banana leaves. It's a signature sweet of Addu's Gaadiya stalls, the roadside carts that sell snacks and drinks after dark.
Why it's made this way: Addu's Gaadiya cart culture gives the atoll its own distinct after-dark food scene, separate from the daytime tea-shop hedhikaa tradition found in Malé and elsewhere in the country.
