The fish's own Dhivehi name is an accidental joke: wahoo is officially kurumas, which literally translates to "short fish" — about as backwards a name as you can give a long, slender fish — so locals often just call the curry by its nickname, dhigumas, instead.
Wahoo fillets are cut and simmered in Thoddoo's Fundi Havaadhu curry paste into kurumas riha, a rich fillet curry served with rice, colloquially known as dhigumas. It's one of the named main dishes built specifically around the island's own curry paste.
Why it's made this way: The everyday habit of reaching for the nickname dhigumas over the officially named kurumas riha shows how the ironic mismatch between the fish's name and its actual size has worked its way into the island's everyday cooking talk.
