The name is literal: bola means ball, after the tamal's round shape.

A round tamal filled with pork in chirmol sauce, wrapped in corn husk tied at both ends, steamed and sold at markets and tamal stands.

Why it's made this way: It is one of the best-known Chiapas tamales, named in regional food references alongside the chipilín and hoja santa types.
