The alacenas around Toluca's Plaza Fray Andrés de Castro stock more than a hundred varieties, from coconut-stuffed candied limes to pine-nut jamoncillo.
Traditional sweets such as pine-nut jamoncillo, cocadas, candied oranges and coconut-filled limes, sold by the piece from the small alacenas (stalls) around Plaza Fray Andrés de Castro beside the Portales in Toluca's historic centre, to eat as you stroll.
Why it's made this way: Toluca's confectionery tradition goes back more than a century, the alacenas are a long-standing city landmark, and the city council lists its typical sweets as part of local gastronomy.
