Cashews grow encased in a fruit, not a shell most people would recognize — the nut dangles from the bottom of a juicy 'cashew apple' that most snack-stall customers never actually see.
Cashews grown on plantations around Dawei are roasted and salted, then sold by weight from market stalls and roadside stands as one of the region's signature snacks. Vendors often sell them alongside betel nut and other local produce for travelers passing through.
Why it's made this way: Cashew farming around Dawei has become a major part of Tanintharyi Region's economy, turning what grows on nearby hillsides into one of its most recognizable take-home snacks.
