Founded in Amsterdam in 1575, Lucas Bols is recognized as the oldest distilled spirits brand in the world still in production today.

Genever is a malty, juniper-flavored spirit, the historical ancestor of gin, traditionally served ice-cold in a small tulip glass filled right to the brim. It's sipped without stirring — you bend down for the first sip before picking the glass up — a genuine local ritual.

Why it's made this way: Distilled on Amsterdam's canals in Noord-Holland since the late 16th century, Bols and genever are as central to the city's drinking culture as beer is to Munich's.
