Miel de Caña

One of Paraguay's simplest traditional desserts is just a slab of fresh queso Paraguay drenched in miel de caña.
Sugarcane juice is slow-boiled into a thick, dark syrup, bottled and sold at markets around Villarrica. It's poured over queso Paraguay as a classic dessert, or stirred into drinks as a sweetener.
Why it's made this way: The syrup is a direct byproduct of Guairá's long-standing sugar mill industry, making it one of the department's most distinctive local products.
