This herbal liqueur has genuine 22-carat gold flakes floating in it, a recipe unchanged since it was invented in Gdańsk back in 1598.
Goldwasser is a clear, sweet herbal liqueur blended from roughly twenty botanicals — cardamom, coriander, cinnamon, cloves — with edible gold leaf suspended inside. It was created in the old Hanseatic port city of Danzig (now Gdańsk) by a Dutch settler distiller.
Why it's made this way: As a Baltic trading hub, Gdańsk had the wealth and exotic-spice access to dream up a liqueur literally dusted with gold, and the drink never left the city's identity.
