They're cooked directly in their own shells over hot coals, so the shell itself acts as the cooking dish — no pan needed.

Limpets pried fresh off coastal rocks are grilled briefly in their shells with garlic, butter, lemon and parsley until just firm, then eaten straight off the half-shell. Sold at harborside stalls and market seafood counters across the Azores.

Why it's made this way: The volcanic Azorean coastline is thick with limpets, and grilling them simply in their shells lets island cooks turn an easily-foraged shellfish into a quick, no-waste snack.
