Rabbitfish, known locally as hareed, is prized enough along this coast that Farasan throws an annual Hareed Festival around its fishing season — the same fish that ends up whole on the grill.
A whole reef fish — commonly rabbitfish (hareed) or snapper — is scored, lightly salted, and grilled whole over open charcoal until the skin blisters, then served with rice or bread and a squeeze of lime. Harbor stalls on Jazan's Farasan Islands and along its coastline sell it fresh off the grill.
Why it's made this way: The Farasan archipelago's fishing economy long predates and stands apart from the highland farming culture of inland Asir, giving Jazan's coast its own distinct, seafood-driven street-food identity.
