Every summer, brass bands descend on the tiny Western Serbian town of Guča for the world's largest trumpet festival — fueled almost entirely by the local plum brandy poured from house to house.
Šljivovica is a clear-to-amber plum brandy, double-distilled and often aged in oak, that forms the backbone of hospitality across the Dragačevo hills of Western Serbia. It's drunk neat in small shot glasses, offered to guests as the first gesture of welcome in any home.
Why it's made this way: The plum orchards around Čačak and Guča in Western Serbia produce some of the country's most prized šljivovica, and the region's Guča Trumpet Festival has made its home-distilled brandy a symbol of the area nationwide.
