Gashaato

Despite its short ingredient list — mainly coconut and sugar — gashaato takes patient, careful stirring over heat to set properly without burning.
Gashaato is a dense, chewy coconut confection, cooked down with sugar until it sets into bite-sized sweets. It's a favorite treat sold in markets and shared during celebrations.
Why it's made this way: Jubaland's coastal groves near Kismayo put coconut within easy reach of southern Somali cooks in a way it isn't for the drier north, giving southern sweets their distinct tropical character.
