Abai Village takes its name from a Hamgyong dialect word for an old man or grandfather, because many of the first refugees to settle there were older men from the north.

A whole squid is gutted, stuffed with seasoned glass noodles, vegetables, and minced meat, then steamed and sliced into rounds like sundae blood sausage. Sokcho's Abai Village, built by displaced Korean War refugees, has served it as its signature dish for decades.

Why it's made this way: Refugees from Hamgyong Province who settled in Sokcho's Abai Village during and after the Korean War brought their home region's habit of stuffing squid from the East Sea, and it became the signature dish of this stretch of Gangwon coast.
