The name comes straight from Hallasan, the volcano at the center of Jeju — this citrus is named after the mountain where it's grown, bump and all.
A cross between the kiyomi orange and ponkan tangerine, this large, easy-peel citrus is sold candied, juiced, and dried at street stalls and markets across Jeju, alongside soft-serve and chocolate-covered snack versions. Its sweetness and volcanic-soil terroir make it Jeju's signature fruit souvenir.
Why it's made this way: Jeju's mild winters, heavy sunshine, and mineral-rich volcanic soil make it one of the only places in Korea suited to growing this fruit, and it has become the island's most recognizable and heavily exported agricultural product.
