The bakery behind it is said to have opened in 1951 selling traditional rice crackers — the choco pie that made it famous nationwide reportedly wasn't added to the menu until decades later.
Two rounds of firm cocoa cake are sandwiched around strawberry jam, whipped cream, and chopped walnuts, then dipped only partway in chocolate so a ring of bare cake shows through. PNB Bakery in downtown Jeonju sells them by the box, often with a queue out the door.
Why it's made this way: PNB is one of Jeonju's oldest bakeries, and its handmade choco pie — thicker, fresher, and less sweet than the mass-produced snack version sold nationwide — turned into one of the city's must-buy street treats and spawned dozens of local imitators.
