The vineyards of Ribera del Duero sit at such high altitude — often over 800 meters — that grapes here can see a 20-degree swing between scorching daytime heat and near-freezing nights, a extreme climate that gives the wine its unusually deep color and structure.
Ribera del Duero is a powerful, dark red wine made mainly from Tempranillo (locally called Tinto Fino), grown along the high plateau of the Duero river in northern Castilla y León. It's full-bodied with notes of black fruit, leather, and oak, typically paired with the region's roast lamb (lechazo) and cured meats.
Why it's made this way: The wine takes its name directly from the Duero river valley running through Castilla y León, where centuries-old bodegas around Aranda de Duero and Peñafiel have made it one of Spain's most prestigious wine regions.
