Its founder, Basel radiologist Hans-Jakob Nidecker, bought the Fischerstube in 1974; when the cartel refused to let him pour the local beer he wanted, he had a small brewery built in the back and brewed his own.
Ueli Bier is a full-flavored beer brewed at the small Fischerstube brewpub on Kleinbasel's Rheingasse, where it was first tapped in November 1974. It's poured fresh at the taps of the brewpub that started it all.
Why it's made this way: Brewed in defiance of the Swiss beer cartel that assigned pubs their suppliers until the early 1990s, Ueli Bier is credited as a forerunner of the Swiss craft-beer movement.
