Its founder, a Basel physician, started brewing purely out of defiance — Switzerland's beer cartel forced pubs to buy from assigned breweries, so in 1974 he brewed his own instead, becoming Switzerland's first craft beer.

Ueli Bier is a full-flavored, top-fermented beer still brewed at the tiny Fischerstube brewpub in Kleinbasel, with the malty Ueli Reverenz special using the same recipe since 1974. It's poured fresh at the taps of the brewpub that started it all.

Why it's made this way: Brewed in Basel since the day it broke the country's decades-old beer cartel, Ueli Bier is credited with kick-starting the entire Swiss craft-beer movement.
