By custom the youngest and the oldest person present break the pot together after reciting 'Ainsi périssent les ennemis de la République!' ('Thus perish the enemies of the Republic!').
A hollow chocolate cauldron bearing Geneva's coat of arms and the date 1602 is filled with marzipan vegetables and sweets wrapped in the city's red and yellow. Chocolatiers and bakeries across Geneva sell them in every size, but only in the weeks around the Escalade festival in early December.
Why it's made this way: It commemorates the night of 11–12 December 1602, when Geneva fought off the Duke of Savoy's surprise attack and, in the legend, a housewife tipped a pot of hot soup onto the attackers.
