Al Ain Oasis holds more than 147,000 date palms across roughly 100 varieties, still watered by falaj channels dating back thousands of years — among the oldest engineered water systems still working anywhere.

Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage site walled right into the middle of the city, is a working palm grove where farmers still harvest dozens of date varieties by hand. Stalls at the oasis gate and the nearby market sell the harvest fresh, from small, mild dabbas dates to sticky, deep-brown varieties for cooking.

Why it's made this way: The oasis has been continuously farmed for more than 4,000 years, and its falaj channels — gravity-fed tunnels drawing groundwater from the base of Jebel Hafeet — are what let date farming survive here in the middle of the desert at all.
