Water for the palm groves here still runs through falaj channels fed by the Hajar Mountains — a gravity-powered irrigation system in use long before Sharjah had a coastline economy.

Al Dhaid, an agricultural town inland from Sharjah city, grows dozens of date varieties across mountain-fed palm groves, sold fresh off the tree at farm stalls and at the town's annual date festival. Vendors set out dates by variety and ripeness stage, from soft khalal to sun-dried tamr.

Why it's made this way: Al Dhaid's position at the foot of the Hajar Mountains gives it groundwater other parts of Sharjah lack, and the emirate has built its date festival there into one of the UAE's largest agricultural showcases, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each season.
