The vines here dig into hills of genuine volcanic origin, giving Zakarpattia's wine a mineral edge found almost nowhere else in Ukraine.
Zakarpattia (Transcarpathia) is Ukraine's most distinctive wine region, its volcanic foothill soils and warm microclimate producing mostly aromatic dry whites, along with some reds. Vineyards here were largely uprooted during the Soviet anti-alcohol campaign but have since been replanted.
