It began life as a digestive tonic, served by the glassful in a small tankard called a 'No. 1 Cup' at an oyster bar its inventor ran in the City of London in the 1840s.

Pimm's No. 1 is a gin-based fruit liqueur, typically mixed with lemonade and packed with cucumber, mint, strawberries and orange to make the classic Pimm's Cup. It's the unofficial drink of London summer — poured at cricket grounds, riverside pubs and garden parties across the city.

Why it's made this way: James Pimm created the recipe at his oyster house in the City of London, making it one of the few drinks that can claim to have been genuinely invented in the capital.
