Its maker, Hamoud Boualem, started out making lemonade in Algiers in 1878, eight years before Coca-Cola was invented, and is the oldest Algerian company still operating.
Selecto is a dark, caramel-and-apple flavored soda made by the Algerian company Hamoud Boualem, first launched in 1907 under the name Victoria. It's sold in bottles and cans from corner shops and street stalls across Algeria, often alongside grilled snacks.
Why it's made this way: It's the flagship product of one of Algeria's oldest beverage companies and remains one of the country's most consumed sodas, a genuine point of local pride.
