The recipe survived a 150-year journey almost untouched: Welsh settlers who founded the 'Y Wladfa' colony in Chubut in 1865 brought it, and Gaiman's tea houses still bake it the same way today.
A dense, dark fruitcake packed with raisins and spices, baked in loaf pans and served in thick slices at Welsh tea houses across Chubut's Chubut Valley towns. It's always part of a full spread alongside scones and jams.
Why it's made this way: Chubut is home to Argentina's Welsh settler colony, founded specifically to preserve Welsh culture, making this fruitcake tradition unique to this one province in all of South America.
