On election day, a barbecued sausage on white bread outside the polling booth is such a fixed ritual that 'democracy sausage' was named Australian National Dictionary Centre's word of the year.
A sausage sizzle is a barbecued sausage served on a single folded slice of white bread with grilled onions and tomato sauce, never in a hot dog roll. The backbone of Australian community fundraising, sold outside hardware stores and, most famously, at polling places on election day.
Why it's made this way: Community groups, schools and charities adopted the cheap, easy-to-cook sausage as a low-effort fundraiser, and its pairing with Saturday elections turned it into an accidental piece of civic culture.
