Kaffeehaus Ritual · Viennese Coffee

Wiener Melange

Photo coming soon

Vienna's coffeehouse culture is so central to city identity that UNESCO has formally listed it as intangible cultural heritage — one of the only times a way of drinking coffee has earned that status.

A Wiener Melange is roughly half strong coffee and half hot milk, topped with a layer of milk foam, traditionally served on a small tray with a glass of water. It's meant to be lingered over for hours in a Kaffeehaus, not rushed.

Why it's made this way: Vienna's coffeehouse tradition traces back to coffee beans left behind after the 1683 Ottoman siege, and by 1900 the city had over 600 coffeehouses functioning as living rooms for writers and thinkers.
