Peket flows freely at Liège's 15 August festival in the Outremeuse quarter, home of Tchantchès, the city's puppet folk hero, who wears a blue smock and red scarf.
Peket is a juniper-based grain spirit similar to jenever, traditionally sold in one-liter clay bottles and served neat or on the rocks, often flavored with fruit or spice. It's a Liège specialty best paired with smoked fish or strong Herve cheese.
Why it's made this way: Distilled along the Meuse River, peket became deeply woven into Liège's working-class and festival culture, distinguishing it from jenever traditions found elsewhere in the Low Countries.
