During World War I, occupying German forces dismantled the abbey's brewing equipment to salvage roughly 700kg of copper — the monks didn't resume brewing at full scale again until decades later.
Achel produces amber and brown Trappist ales, brewed on a small scale inside the Abbey of Our Lady of Saint Benedict right on the Belgian-Dutch border. The beers are rich, warming and traditionally sold only at the abbey's own café.
