In 2021 the last monks left Achel for Westmalle, and the beer lost its Authentic Trappist Product logo, although brewing continues under Westmalle's supervision.
Achel makes blond and brown ales, brewed on a small scale at the former Abbey of Saint Benedict (Achelse Kluis) right on the Belgian-Dutch border. The beers are rich and warming, and are poured at the abbey's own café as well as sold in bottles.
Why it's made this way: Brewed in the village of Achel in the Belgian province of Limburg since the 19th century, it represents this province's own distinct abbey-brewing heritage, separate from the beer culture of Dutch Limburg just across the border.
