Liefmans Goudenband

Around 1900, the brewery began accepting black cherries from local farmers in exchange for beer, filling its maturation tanks with fruit — the origin of its famous cherry ale tradition.

Goudenband is a deep reddish-brown Flanders sour ale, tart and slightly sweet, aged and blended for a complex, vinous character unlike typical Belgian beer. It's a defining example of the region's centuries-old mixed-fermentation brewing style.

Why it's made this way: Brewed in Oudenaarde since the 17th century, Liefmans is the standard-bearer for East Flanders' distinctive sour brown ale tradition, a style found almost nowhere outside this corner of Belgium.
