Beach vendors chop the top off each coconut to order with a machete right in front of you, and the same shell often gets recycled as an ashtray or cup holder stuck straight into the sand.
A whole green coconut, chilled and hacked open on the spot, served with a straw by vendors pushing carts or coolers along Rio's beachfront. It's sold everywhere from Copacabana to Ipanema, priced by the coconut, not the cup.
Why it's made this way: Rio's beach culture built an entire mobile vendor economy around fresh coconuts specifically for sunbathers, distinct from the bottled coconut water sold in shops elsewhere in Brazil.
